Forecast:
In a draft class full of big, physical WRs, Ja’Lynn Polk fits the bill. Spending most of this season as the #2 to Rome Odunze, Polk still managed to make an impact. As a receiver he flashes great contested catch ability, is hard to bully off his routes, and shows great willingness to block for his teammates.
While his route tree is small, he can find success at different levels of the field. We see this in how he runs. Polk often gets up to speed and is physical enough to stay there. This comes at the detriment of burst or change of direction speed of his routes. It also explains why someone without a speedy top gear, he continues to beat defenders over the top and at the sidelines.
His receiving instinct is his best trait, and he looks the most dangerous once the ball is in the air. Polk tracks deep balls incredibly well. Often fighting through contact to win position on the defender or going past the defender never slowing in his route to give him the best chance at the ball. When the ball arrives, Polk excels at adjusting to the ball. He has great body control and focus to pluck balls in with his hands.
Ja’Lynn Polk will be best suited as a number 2 or slot receiver for a team. If left 1v1 against the lesser defender I believe he can win regularly. He plays at a good game speed to be effective at some medium length routes and has enough shiftiness and physicality to make defenders miss on screen and short passes.
